Field Trips - 2021-22
Field trips are an essential – and required - part of this course. Students are expected to attend all trips and participate in all activities. Field trips are active learning experiences, not days off from school.
It is the student's responsibility to inform all of their teachers BEFORE the field trip. You are responsible for getting and completing all assignments you miss as a result of the field trip. We will likely go on field trips even if it is raining, except in severe circumstances. If there is inclement weather on the day of a field trip, please listen for announcements, look for a Remind text, or contact Mr. Strieb. If a field trip is cancelled you are still responsible for any work, for any of your classes, that is due that day.
Filled-out, signed permission slips must be handed in by the date requested by Mr. Strieb.
Mr. Strieb reserves the right to exclude a student from a field trip because of behavioral or academic issues in his or another teacher's class.
For most field trips, please bring lunch, water and sunscreen. Do not bring inappropriate materials. On all trips you must wear close-toed, comfortable shoes (i.e., sneakers) that can get dirty and wet. There may be other clothing requirements for specific field trips. You will not be allowed to go in inappropriate clothing, including sandals and flip flops. You must bring some form of identification - school ID or driver's license is best.
These are the tentative dates for all of Mr. Strieb's APES field trips for 2021-22:
September 24, 2021 (7:20 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.) or Wednesday September 29, 2021 (7:20 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.) – Sunken Meadow State Park to investigate salt marsh ecology.
Thursday October 7, 2021 (7:20 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.) or Friday October 15, 2021 (7:20 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.) – Canoeing the Nissequogue River to investigate estuarine water quality parameters.
Monday, November 15, 2021 (7:20 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.) or Thursday, November 18, 2021 (7:20 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.) – Long Island Pine Barrens to investigate ecological succession.
Winter/Spring 2022 - TBD – Port Jefferson Waste Water Treatment Plant to investigate sewage treatment plant operations.
Winter/Spring 2022 – TBD – Covanta Resource Recovery Facility in East Northport to investigate incineration of Smithtown/Huntington solid waste and generation of energy.

2021 AP Environmental Science Exam Review
The in-class 2021 AP Environmental Science Exam is Friday May 14th at noon.

Note that at Smithtown High School West the course is taught in a different order. Our units are different than on this website; we cover all of the material, just in a different order.
As part of this course you should have learned certain distinct skills, called science practices, that that will help you learn to think and act like an environmental scientist. This document lists these science practices, describes them, and shows the approximate weighting of each skill on both the multiple choice and free response parts of the APES exam.
There are four Big Ideas in APES that are themes that run throughout the course. If you can weave some themes from these Big Ideas into your answers to the free response questions, you will improve your score.
The following links are here for you to use as you see fit. Some are fairly general, while others are pretty specific. You probably cannot use them all, so pick and choose those on topics with which you need more of a review. We will not be using these in class and they will not be required assignments; they are for you to use on your own.
